Program: Computer Programming – Software Development and Network Engineering

“My name is Sania Sachdeva, and I am currently immersed in coding while actively building meaningful connections on campus. As a Peer Mentor for Winter 2025, I have engaged in outreach initiatives and popup events, contributing positively to the Sheridan community. Being involved on campus has been a transformative experience for me. Whether it's making someone smile during fun activities, guiding students toward Sheridan's valuable resources, or participating in wellness walkouts where we share both happy and challenging moments, I find deep fulfillment in fostering a supportive environment. This journey has significantly shaped my personality, making me more polite, inclusive, and kind. Inclusivity is of utmost importance to me, especially in a diverse community like Sheridan, where students come from various cultural and religious backgrounds. To ensure that everyone feels valued and respected, I am mindful of using English as a common language and always ask for pronouns at the beginning of interactions to honour individual identities. Through my experiences, I have developed a strong commitment to leadership, advocacy, and creating an inclusive space for all students. With this passion, I am eager to take on greater responsibilities and continue making a positive impact as a member of the Board of Directors.”

Write about one of the current student issues you selected above. share why advocating for this issue is important to you:

“Cultural Representation and Inclusion is something I’m deeply passionate about because it ensures every student, regardless of their cultural or social background, feels seen, heard, and valued within the campus community. A diverse and inclusive environment is essential for fostering respect, understanding, and equality, which are necessary for creating a welcoming space where students from all walks of life can thrive. At Sheridan, where students come from various cultural and religious backgrounds, it's crucial we promote inclusivity so no one feels marginalized. As a Peer Mentor for Winter 2025, I’ve engaged with students from different backgrounds, helping them connect to the community and resources at Sheridan. I’ve seen firsthand how students may experience isolation or feel underrepresented in certain areas of campus life. Whether it's helping new students navigate the campus or participating in outreach events, I ensure everyone feels welcomed. I’ve also found that asking for pronouns and being mindful of using English as a common language creates a respectful space for all. By advocating for cultural inclusion, we can push for better representation in student organizations, events, and academic curricula. Representation is essential for all students to see themselves reflected in their campus environment. It helps create a supportive and enriching environment that celebrates diversity and promotes global awareness. I’ve seen how important it is for students to be represented, as it encourages a sense of belonging and builds confidence. Supporting cultural representation means addressing barriers or biases students may face. This includes advocating for equal access to resources, opportunities, and social engagement for all students. When we work together to create an inclusive space, we build a stronger, more cohesive community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. This approach not only enriches students' experiences but also contributes to building a harmonious and thriving campus community where diversity is celebrated.”
