“My name is Anubhav, and I am a proud student of Sheridan College. As an international student, I understand the challenges that students face when adapting to a new environment, finding suitable accommodation, and securing part-time jobs to support their studies. With this in mind, I took the initiative to create a WhatsApp group specifically for international students, focusing on job opportunities, housing, and overall student engagement. This platform has grown into a supportive community where students can share job leads, find reliable housing options, and connect with others facing similar challenges. Beyond just information sharing, the group has fostered a sense of belonging, ensuring that no student feels alone in their journey at Sheridan. My involvement in the Sheridan community extends beyond this initiative—I actively engage with students, listen to their concerns, and strive to find practical solutions. I believe that effective student leadership is about creating real impact, and my work has allowed me to do just that by bridging gaps between students and available resources. As a candidate for the Board of Directors, I aim to bring my experience, leadership, and commitment to student welfare to a larger platform. I want to advocate for better support systems for not just international students but for the whole student community.”

What are some of the student issues that you would like to bring to the Board table?

Cultural Representation and Inclusion
Health and Wellness
Student Housing Resources

Write about one of the current student issues you selected above. share why advocating for this issue is important to you:

“As a student myself, and as someone who has actively helped international students find housing, part-time jobs, and community support through my WhatsApp group, I have seen firsthand how difficult it can be to secure safe, affordable, and reliable accommodation. For many of us, the struggle to find housing is not just an inconvenience—it is a daily challenge that impacts our finances, mental health, and academic success.

That is why I am running for the Board of Directors—to advocate for better student housing resources and solutions that truly support us. Let’s talk about the reality we face as students:

  1. Rent is Too High: Housing near Sheridan is expensive, and many students—especially international students—struggle to afford rent while balancing tuition and living costs. Some of us have to take on multiple part-time jobs just to pay for a place to live, leaving little time for studies.

  2. Scams and Unsafe Living Conditions: Too many students have fallen victim to fake rental listings, unfair leases, or landlords who take advantage of us because we are new to the system. Many are forced to live in overcrowded or poorly maintained apartments because there are no better options.

  3. Lack of Available Housing: The demand for student housing far outweighs the supply. Many students spend weeks—even months—searching for a place to stay, often settling for accommodations that are too far, too expensive, or simply not suitable for student life. These challenges affect our academic focus, our mental health, and our overall college experience. This is not just a housing issue—it is a student success issue.

If elected as your Board of Directors representative, I will fight for real, practical solutions to these housing challenges, including:

  1. A Verified Housing Platform – We need a safe, college-supported website where students can find legitimate rental listings, reducing the risk of scams and unfair leases.

  2. More On-Campus Housing Options – I will advocate for Sheridan to expand its residence facilities or partner with local housing providers to offer more affordable student accommodations.

  3. Tenant Rights Support – Many students do not know their rights as renters. I will push for Sheridan to provide workshops, legal guidance, and emergency support for students facing unfair rental situations.

  4. Affordable Housing Partnerships – We can work with landlords and the local government to create student-friendly housing policies, including fair rent prices and better living conditions.

  5. Emergency Housing Assistance – No student should ever have to worry about homelessness. I will push for emergency housing options for students facing urgent accommodation crises.

Let’s Make a Change Together Sheridan is our home away from home. Let’s ensure every student has a place to call home”
