Program: Computer Systems Technology – Software Development and Network Engineering
“My name is Krishna Sharma, and I am a third-semester student in the Software Development and Network Engineering program at Sheridan College. With a strong passion for technology, leadership, and community engagement, I have actively participated in various academic and extracurricular activities to enhance both my technical skills and student experience. I have worked on multiple academic projects, including developing an employee management system using JavaScript, Node.js, and MySQL. Additionally, I contributed to a Record Keeper application using Python and MySQL, which improved database management efficiency. My experience extends beyond coursework; I have participated in the Hackville Hackathon, where I collaborated with a team to develop a web-based personal finance tracker using React.js and Firebase. Beyond academics, I am committed to community service. I volunteered for Teach for India, where I developed a responsive website for an NGO, enhancing user accessibility and engagement. Additionally, I was part of ZIM.js HTML5 Game Development, contributing to interactive web applications. At Sheridan, I am an advocate for student engagement, well-being, and inclusivity. I believe in fostering a positive and supportive environment where students can thrive both academically and personally. If elected as a Board of Directors member, I will strive to enhance student life by advocating for financial support, mental health resources, and better transportation services.”
What are some of the student issues that you would like to bring to the Board table?
✔ Cultural Representation and Inclusion
✔ Financial Support: Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards
✔ Health and Wellness
Write about one of the current student issues you selected above. share why advocating for this issue is important to you:
“Firstly, I know someone who suffers from mental health issues, and I know how it feels to struggle with mental health issues, which makes me think that there are a lot of students in our college who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks and whatnot, which made me more passionate specifically about health and wellness. Student well-being is the foundation of academic success and a fulfilling college experience. At Sheridan, many students face overwhelming stress, anxiety, and mental health challenges, yet accessing timely support remains a struggle. If elected to the SSU Board of Directors, I will advocate for better mental health services, increased accessibility to wellness resources, and campus-wide initiatives to promote student well-being. One of my top priorities will be expanding mental health support on campus. Many students experience long wait times for counselling services, making it difficult to get the help they need when they need it the most. I will push for more counsellors, shorter wait times, and expanded mental health resources, ensuring that every student has access to timely and effective support. Additionally, I will work to introduce 24/7 mental health assistance through Empower Me and other virtual counselling services, so students can get help outside of regular hours. Beyond mental health, physical wellness plays a key role in overall student success. I will advocate for the introduction of free fitness programs, yoga and meditation sessions, and nutrition workshops to encourage a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Access to physical activities should not be a financial burden for students, so I will work towards making fitness programs and gym memberships more affordable. Creating dedicated wellness spaces on campus is another critical initiative I will support. A calm and inviting space where students can relax, unwind, and take a break from their busy schedules will significantly improve mental well-being. This space can include mindfulness activities, stress relief tools, and peer support areas where students can connect with one another. Raising awareness and breaking the stigma around mental health is equally important. Many students hesitate to seek help due to fear of judgment or a lack of awareness about available resources. I will push for mental health awareness campaigns, peer-led support groups, and interactive workshops to foster a culture of openness and support. By normalizing conversations around mental health, we can encourage more students to seek help without hesitation. Ultimately, my goal is to create a healthier, more supportive, and inclusive campus environment where students feel empowered to take care of their well-being. When students have access to proper mental health care, physical wellness programs, and a community that supports them, they are better equipped to succeed academically and personally. If elected, I will dedicate myself to ensuring that health and wellness remain a top priority.”
