GURSHAAN SINGH SIDHU

TRC Candidate

Program: Computer System Technology - Information Systems Engineering

“My name is Gurshaan Sidhu, and I am an Information Systems Engineering student at Sheridan College. With a strong background in IT, project management, and leadership, I actively seek opportunities to enhance the student experience at Sheridan. I worked as a Customer Service Representative (Front Desk) at Fuzion Fitness, where I interacted directly with customers, handled administrative tasks, and developed excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

As a Teacher Assistant (TA) for Python Programming at Brilliko Institute, I supported students and faculty in learning one of the most in-demand programming languages. I collaborated with four instructors, assisting in organizing coursework, preparing lesson materials, and ensuring smooth class execution, including setting up lab environments, reviewing lecture slides, and helping with live demonstrations.

One of my notable contributions was organizing a Thrift Event at Sheridan College in 2024, where I played a key role in planning and executing the event. This initiative not only promoted sustainable shopping but also fostered student engagement. I am also a member of the SSA community at Davis Campus, where I assist in organizing events, club fairs, and volunteering activities. As a Computer Science enthusiast, I was also a member of SCC (Sheridan Coding Club), where like-minded students formed teams for coding competitions, collaborated on personal projects, and held meetings for skill development.”

What are some of the student issues that you would like to bring to the Board table?

Cultural Representation and Inclusion
Financial Support: Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards
Student Housing Resources

Write about one of the current student issues you selected above. share why advocating for this issue is important to you:

“As a student, I understand firsthand how financial barriers can limit access to education and opportunities. Many students face significant financial hardships that not only affect their ability to afford tuition but also impact their day-to-day lives. The cost of education goes beyond just tuition fees—it includes textbooks, transportation, housing, food, and other essential expenses. For many students, these financial burdens create an immense amount of stress, making it difficult to focus on academics, participate in extracurricular activities, or even afford basic necessities.

By advocating for increased scholarships, bursaries, and awards, I aim to ensure that all students, regardless of their financial background, have the opportunity to succeed. No student should have to compromise their education or well-being due to financial limitations. Unfortunately, many students are forced to take on multiple part-time jobs or work long hours just to make ends meet. While working during college can provide valuable experience, excessive work hours often come at the expense of academic performance, personal development, and mental well-being. Bursaries and financial support programs can help reduce this burden by decreasing the number of hours students need to work, allowing them to prioritize their studies and actively engage in college life.

Additionally, scholarships and bursaries play a crucial role in recognizing student achievements, promoting inclusivity, and encouraging academic excellence. Many students demonstrate incredible dedication to their studies, extracurricular involvement, and community service, yet financial struggles often hinder their ability to reach their full potential. By expanding financial aid opportunities, we can ensure that deserving students receive the recognition and support they need to continue excelling. These programs also promote diversity by ensuring that students from different socio-economic backgrounds have equal opportunities to pursue higher education.

Together, we can foster a supportive learning environment where all students, regardless of their financial background, have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. Investing in students today means investing in a brighter future for everyone. Through collaboration, awareness, and commitment, we can make a real difference in the lives of countless students, ensuring that financial difficulties are no longer a roadblock to education and success.”
