Jaspreet Kaur
Davis Candidate
Program: Early Childhood Education, Diploma
“Hello, my name is Jaspreet Kaur, and I am thrilled to nominate myself for the position of Board Member of the Sheridan Student Union. I am currently in my second term in the Early Childhood Education Diploma program at Sheridan College. When it comes to my individuality and my involvement in the Sheridan Community, I see it under three different aspects as listed below:
Academics: Academically, I have been deeply engaged in my studies, striving for excellence in my coursework and actively participating in academic discussions as showcased by my term 1 GPA, which is 3.8. My dedication to learning has not only resulted in academic achievements but has also equipped me with valuable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management. I am in good standing with all the faculty members. I have connected with my academic advisor, professors, and field placement officers from time to time to make sure I’m on the right track and follow suggested pathways.
Extracurriculars: Beyond academics, I have been an enthusiastic participant in extracurricular activities at Sheridan. I have been involved in the ADHD Club and Sikh Students Association Club, where I have contributed my time and skills to create a vibrant and inclusive community. I remember I joined the Sikh Students Association right on my orientation day and when I volunteered for their very first event for that very term, they assigned me the position of an executive. Apart from these clubs, I attend various on- campus events like leadership workshops, events organized by Sheridan College, SSU, and Community partners, and schedule one-on-one interactions with representatives from different departments at Sheridan to understand them well and present my suggestions to learn and get more involved in the community. These experiences have allowed me to develop leadership skills, teamwork, and a strong sense of community spirit.
Individuality: As an individual, I bring a unique perspective and a passion for making a difference. I have always been involved in the community, be it here in Canada or my home country. The sense of selfless service to anyone who requires aid or voice allows me to serve in any way possible. This sense of service allowed me to serve in three different NGOs and work with the Indian Child Advisor for UN General Comment 26 on Child Rights, Environment, and Climate Change. I believe in the power of student voice and advocacy, which is why I am eager to serve as a voice for my fellow students on the Board of Directors. My experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, have shaped me into a well-rounded individual who is committed to serving the Sheridan community.
If elected, I am dedicated to working collaboratively with the Board to address the needs and concerns of all Sheridan students. Thank you for considering my nomination, and I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the Sheridan Student Union.”
What are some of the student issues that you would like to bring to the Board table?
✔ Health and Wellness
✔ Environment & Sustainability Initiatives
✔ Promote Existing Opportunities and Services
Write about one of the current student issues you selected above. share why advocating for this issue is important to you:
“I am deeply committed to addressing both mental and physical health issues among students. While our campus offers mental health services, I recognize that there can be barriers preventing students from seeking help, such as stigma or a lack of awareness about available resources. Many students may have a mental block in seeking counselling or medical assistance until their situation becomes critical. I believe that by fostering a supportive and encouraging environment, we can break down these barriers and empower students to prioritize their well-being. Sometimes, all it takes is a little encouragement for someone to take that important step towards self-care. Moving forward, I aim to work on strategies that will help students make the most of these services. By promoting accessibility and availability of mental health services and collaborating with student groups, we can create a campus environment that supports mental health and encourages students to seek help when needed. This also includes raising awareness about the Accessible Learning Department because many students (especially international students) are not fully aware of this service and never think of utilizing it when going through a tough period.”
